Make Your Patio a Summer Haven

Summertime is almost here. As the weather gets warmer, it’s time to drag out last year’s lawn furniture and decide how to decorate your patio or deck. Here are a few great ideas to get you started. Turn your patio into a summer heaven for your friends and family!

Begin by giving the deck a good cleaning. Sweep and scrub the deck; eliminate last fall’s debris. Replace any damaged or broken boards. Do the wooden timbers need a fresh coat of stain? If the patio floor is concrete, think about using an acid staining technique to create a warm, engaging motif.

After the stain has dried, it’s time to decide how you are going to decorate this corner of your world. Maximizing space while creating a cozy, intimate feeling can be challenging. Don’t be intimidated by the empty expanse of flooring before you; visualize exactly how you want it to look when you are done. If this is difficult, take it one step at a time.

Are you planning to use your patio after sunset, or only during the day? If you frequently entertain on summer evenings, plan for adequate lighting. Although solar lighting is environmentally friendly, it probably won’t be very practical as a main source of lighting. It can be used very effectively, however, to gently illuminate flowerbeds and other landscaping borders along the edge of the patio.

Dim, recessed lighting offers a much cozier feel than high-powered lamps or standard outdoor porch lighting. This will also result in a more intimate mood. If you need bright lights from time to time, have them available, but be sure to turn them off when they are not needed.

Determine the furniture motif you are going to use. Wrought iron can be decorative, but not comfortable. In comparison, overstuffed cushions are comfortable, but not practical unless you can cover the lawn furniture easily. Wooden furniture and benches with fabric cushions and throws work well; wood weathers bad weather. Store cushions and throws inside and bring them out to decorate the patio within minutes!

Use sturdy fabric that wears well and hides small stains and moderate amounts of dirt. Generally, multicolored fabrics and earth tones will be more durable than white or bright colors. Moreover, those that contain earth tones typically exude a warmer, friendlier atmosphere.

Consider purchasing a patio fireplace. If you have small children, consider a ceramic model that is more fully enclosed. If older teens or adults will primarily use your patio, give your imagination and your tastes free rein. Many copper, ceramic, iron, and mosaic styles are available. For example, you may decide to use fabrics with warm tones and an oriental design. A cast-iron Asian pagoda fireplace would coordinate perfectly.

Add small wooden tables for drinks and food. Baskets and pots of flowers aren’t necessary if your lawn is landscaped, and often make things more cluttered. Focus your decorating attention on cozy, uncluttered spaces that create intimacy and warmth. In doing so, you will make your patio the envy of all your friends!
