Upholstered Headboard Project
Great Children's Headboard
This is a great idea for a child's room and the fabric used can match the decor of the room!
We used this headboard for a child's room, but the same
technique can be applied to any size existing headboard
or one you cut out from plywood, like we did here.
MATERIALS LIST:
--1/2 INCH PLYWOOD CUT INTO DESIRED SHAPE (38''WIDE FOR TWIN)
OR EXISTING WOOD HEADBOARD
--ADHESIVE CRAFT SPRAY GLUE
--FABRIC GLUE
--ONE PACKAGE MED. WT. QUILT BATTING IN TWN, QN OR KNG
--5 YARDS (FOR TWIN) MED. BLUE CHAMBRAY FABRIC
--5 YARDS RED TRIANGLE BORDER
--3 YARDS RED DECORATIVE CORD
--4 1 1/2 INCH WOOD SCREWS
--STAPLE GUN AND STAPLES
--ELEC. SCREWDRIVER OR DRILL (FOR ATTATCHING LEGS)
- YOU CAN EITHER HAVE THE LUMBER CENTER MAKE A STRAIGHT CUT FOR A SQUARE HEADBOARD OR USE A JIGSAW TO CUT DESIRED SHAPE INTO TOP PORTION. THE LEGS ARE SIMPLY 1"X1"'S CUT TO DESIRED HEIGHT AND ATTACHED TO EACH SIDE WITH TWO WOOD SCREWS EACH FROM BACK.
- NEXT, CUT THE QUILT BATTING TO COVER THE WHOLE FRONT PORTION OVERLAPPING
BY ABOUT 3 INCHES. MAKE TWO (2) OF THESE PIECES.
- SPRAY THE FABRIC ADHESIVE DIRECTLY ONTO THE WOOD WHERE THE BATTING WILL
BE PLACED. THIS WILL KEEP IT FROM SLIDING AROUND TOO MUCH.
- USE THE STAPLE GUN TO ATTACH THE BATTING BY PLACING STAPLES THROUGH THE
OVERLAPPING BACK PORTION ALL THE WAY AROUND ABOUT 4" APART.
- ONCE THE FILLING PORTION IS IN PLACE, YOU CAN SPRAY THE ADHESIVE GLUE ON
THE FRONT PORTION OF THE BATTING TO KEEP THE FABRIC TIGHT, BUT USE CAUTION
BECAUSE YOU MUST PLACE IT PERFECTLY TO AVOID WRINKLES.
- CUT AND PLACE THE COVER FABRIC OVER THE BATTING, OVERLAPPING BY 4 INCHES
AND STAPLE TO THE BACK WITH ABOUT 2 TO 3 INCHES INBETWEEN EACH STAPLE.
START AT THE TOP AND WORK OUT WRINKLES AS YOU GO. ON THE CORNERS, YOU
WILL HAVE TO MAKE A "BOX" PLEAT (LIKE WRAPPING A PRESENT) TO MAKE THE
CORNERS LIE FLAT IN THE FRONT.
- NOW, YOU CAN COVER THE BACK AND LEGS SECTION WITH THE REMAINING FABRIC.
THIS DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PRECISE SINCE IT WILL NOT BE SEEN, BUT YOU CAN USE
THE EDGE OF THE FABRIC ON ONE SIDE AND FOLD OVER TO HIDE STAPLES, OR COVER
THE STAPLES BY GLUING RIBBON OVER THEM.
- FOR THE EDGING, WE USED RED TRIANGLES AND SIMPLY GLUED WITH FABRIC GLUE
AROUND THE EDGES FROM THE BACK.
- WE THEN USED THE RED ROPE CORD TO TIE AROUND THE POST AREA AT THE TOP AND
GLUED AT THE BACK. WE ALSO PUT A FEW STAPLES FOR SUPPORT.
- THIS CAN BE ATTACHED DIRECTLY TO THE WALL OR BRACKETS CAN BE USED TO
ATTACH IT TO THE BED FRAME OR YOU CAN SIMPLY "SIT" BEHIND THE BED SANDWICHED
AGAINST THE WALL.
This makes a great children's headboard that can change as they grow. It would also be great in a larger size for parent's rooms! The fabric can change as your taste and decor does.
